Today was 10th and last SOTA in the White
Mountains. W7A/GR-001
- Mogollon Rim will be an easy one but more importantly, I wanted to
take a trip down to Hannagan Meadow.
It’s been an active week. I did at-least one SOTA attempt every day
since I got here. It’s been a lot of
fun, I’ve seen some very beautiful country and netted 100 SOTA pts.
(Note: I spent most of my time shooting video for this trip so not many stills)
The drive down to Hannagan Meadow takes about
30 minutes. I got up early, hoping to
see some wild critters, but it was disappointing as I only saw a small group of
female elk.
The ingress point is 2 to 4 miles past the
Hannagan Meadow lodge. I figured the
road wouldn’t go that far up and I was right.
No worries, the hike was only 0.8 miles.
They’ve been getting a lot of rain so it was lush and green... and
WET. The fire did touch there in places
and there were a lot of fallen trees. I was
able to hit the Alpine VHF repeater from this location, which is always nice to
know. That repeater by the way, is
networked to other repeaters into New Mexico, down to Sierra Vista, Tucson, and
Greens peak, on the other side of Springerville. I don’t think there was any time that I was
out of reach of one of those repeaters.
The activation of Mogollon Rim was a huge
success, with 28 contacts on 20 and 40 meters.
I tried 17 meter but no joy. . I
had quite the pileup for a while. The propagation to the midwest was extremely
good and I had a contacts on the east coast as well. I was going to dial around a bit and see if I
could get a DX contact but I had chores to do back at the
cabin, make a run into the next town for a vacuum cleaner, and make a run to
the trash transfer station.
After meditating I packed and started my egress. When I arrived at the car, I noticed that my
cell phone was gone. It’s case holds my
drivers license and a credit card. After
rummaging around the car for a while, I headed back up the road. I remember using it while on the road,
double checking that I was on the road I thought I should be on. I found it about 1/4 mile from the car. I’m sure it came out as I was stepping /
climbing over fallen trees. With the
cell phone recovered, I went up the road a few miles and had breakfast at the
Hannagan Meadow lodge and then headed home.
The activation was easy and a beautiful
spot. I deserve an easy activation after
yesterday's killer hike and #FAIL at Gobbler Peak.
